What Is a Good Typing Speed in WPM?

There is no universal WPM number that makes someone a “good typist.” The right target depends on what you type, how long you need to sustain the pace and how accurate you must be.

Start with your own baseline

Measure your current 60-second WPM and accuracy three to five times on different days. Use the median or a stable average rather than your single fastest attempt.

Everyday typing and professional needs

Casual computer use may feel comfortable at moderate speeds, while transcription, data entry, programming or administrative exams can demand a higher sustained pace. Accuracy and consistency become more important as the task gets longer.

Peak speed versus sustainable speed

A 15-second sprint can be much faster than a two-minute test. Treat short tests as peak-speed indicators and longer tests as a better picture of practical endurance.

Set a useful target

Aim first for a small improvement, such as 5 WPM while keeping accuracy stable. Once that pace becomes comfortable, set the next target. Progressive goals are more reliable than trying to jump directly to an arbitrary number.

Practical checklist

  • Compare like-for-like tests.
  • Keep accuracy above your normal baseline while raising speed.
  • Use a longer test before calling a new speed your true level.
