What Is WPM? How Typing Speed Is Calculated
WPM (words per minute) is the most common way to describe typing speed. It turns character output into a standard measure so performances on different texts can be compared more fairly.
How WPM works
Most typing tests treat five correctly typed characters, including spaces where appropriate, as one standard word. A simplified formula is correct characters divided by five, then divided by elapsed minutes. This avoids giving an advantage to texts that happen to contain many very short words.
WPM and CPM are different
CPM shows characters per minute and is closer to raw keyboard output. WPM is easier to understand at a glance. Looking at both is useful, especially when comparing languages whose average word length differs.
Accuracy changes the meaning of speed
A fast result with frequent mistakes may feel impressive but can be inefficient in real work. Compare WPM with accuracy and error counts. A slightly lower WPM with strong accuracy is often a better foundation for long-term improvement.
How to use your score
Take a 60-second medium test as a baseline. Repeat under the same language, duration and difficulty. Compare several sessions rather than one unusually good or bad run. Your trend is more useful than a single number.
